What's the difference between a marine polishing compound and a polish?
A compound is coarser — it physically cuts the top layer of oxidation and scratches off the surface. A polish is finer — it removes the haze left by the compound and adds a protective gloss. Most restoration jobs use both: compound first to correct, polish second to finish. For lightly-worn surfaces, you can skip straight to polish. For heavily oxidized gelcoat, you may need Buff & Cut Compound before the polishing compound.
Can I use Aquatech polishes by hand, or do I need a buffer?
Both work. Premier Polish and Ultra High Gloss Polish are designed to be hand-applied with a wax applicator pad. Marine Polishing Compound works by hand on small areas but goes faster on a machine buffer at 1,500–2,000 RPM. Buff & Cut Compound is designed for machine use — hand application is possible on spot corrections but won't remove heavy oxidation efficiently.
How do I know which polish or compound my boat needs?
Run your hand across the gelcoat. If it feels smooth and still beads water after a wash, use Premier Polish or Ultra High Gloss Polish. If it looks dull but feels smooth, start with Marine Polishing Compound. If it feels chalky or rough and looks faded, you need Buff & Cut Compound first, then move to Polishing Compound and finish with Ultra High Gloss.
Are Aquatech polishes safe on colored gelcoat and painted surfaces?
Yes. Every Aquatech polish and compound is tested safe on gelcoat (all colors), marine paint, fiberglass, metal, and polyurethane yacht finishes. For dark-colored gelcoat, use the Polishing Pad (foam) rather than a wool buffing pad to avoid swirl marks.
How often should I polish my boat?
A standalone polish with Premier Polish or Ultra High Gloss Polish twice per season is enough for most boats — usually once at spring commissioning and once mid-summer. Boats with heavy sun exposure or saltwater use benefit from a full compound-polish-finish restoration every 2–3 years to reset the gelcoat.
Do Aquatech polishes contain abrasives?
Compounds (Buff & Cut, Polishing Compound) contain micro-abrasives sized to cut oxidation without scratching. Finish polishes (Premier Polish, Ultra High Gloss Polish) contain polymer chemistry rather than abrasives — they clean, fill, and protect without removing surface material.
